The US Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a final rule on May 2, 2023, that amends their drug testing program to include oral fluid as a specimen type, effective June 1, 2023.
What To Know:
- U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services will need to certify at least two laboratories for federally regulated oral fluid testing and the devices to be used. This has not be done yet.
- All labs involved will be keeping clients updated along the way.
- The Final Rule harmonizes with the pertinent section of the HHS oral fluid Mandatory Guidelines from January 2020.
- Oral Fluid Testing is NOT replacing Urine Testing; it is an additional methodology.
- Helping to combat cheating
- Less Intrusive when direct observation is required for urine testing with gender concerns/requirements.
- Scientifically viable and legally defensible
