Upcoming Electronic Transmission Requirements

**CDL Drivers No Longer Required to Submit their Medical Certificate**

Beginning June 23, 2025:

  • The State will no longer allow any form of submission of their medical certificates.  ALL STATES have adopted this new system.
  • Medical Examiners will no longer need to issue the medical examiner’s certificate to CDL drivers.

This is a nationwide shift from FMCSA to automate medical certification data for commercial drivers.

What does this mean for the Medical Examiner?

  • The only official record of the CDL holder’s certification will be the information electronically submitted from the Medical Examiner through the National Registry.  The National Registry will then batch out all information to the State Drivers Licensing Agency [DMV].

What does this mean for the Driver?

  • CDL holders will not need to carry their medical certificate as proof of medical certification.  Physical exams should still be scheduled a couple of weeks before the expiration date to prevent any form of lapse in certification.

What does this mean for Motor Carriers/Employers?

  • Motor Carriers will no longer be required to verify that the medical examiner is listed on the National Registry.  Motor Carriers must use the driver’s motor vehicle record to document the medical certification status.

Why?

  • The State has made the change to the new reporting system, allowing the National Registry to electronically transmit the driver’s medical certificate information directly to the State.  This information is available on the Commercial Drivers License Information System (CDLIS).  A service offered by Before You Hire, Inc.  Inquire to make this a part of your standard DOT process.
